WB Is Going Day And Date With VERONICA MARS
If you don’t live in one of the maybe dozen cities that will actually be playing the Veronica Mars movie in a theater, don’t fret. Warner Bros. has announced that they plan a day and date release on VOD for the crowd-funded return of Ms. Mars. When the film drops in theaters on March 14, Veronica Mars will also be available on iTunes, Amazon and other VOD outlets. Part of the release strategy steams from the fact that Kickstarter donors who gave $35 or more were set to receive a digital copy of the film after the theatrical release. Well, it looks like that digital copy will be delivered on the same day instead of having to wait a week or two. For Warner Bros., this gives them a chance to experiment with day and date VOD releasing, something the major...
Read MoreWho Might Michael B. Jordan Play In BATMAN VS. SUPERMAN?
I usually avoid posting all the Batman Vs. Superman rumors that surface on the internet, especially those from Latino Review. But I can help myself today because this rumor involves one of the biggest up and coming stars of recent years: Michael B. Jordan. According to LR, Zack Snyder has met with Jordan and at the same time is in the process of casting “a black actor in his early 20s who is also physically fit” for a small, recurring role in the DCU films. Well, over at AICN they’ve added to the speculation, saying that Jordan could be playing JLA member Victor Stone a.k.a Cyborg. Of course, we’re in rumor territory so take anything here with a grain of salt. But adding Michael B. Jordan to your movie never hurt anything....
Read MoreWhy Horror Films Need Their Own Oscars
With the main exceptions of The Silence of the Lambs and The Exorcist (which in my opinion should have won the Oscar it was up for), horror films are nearly always ignored come awards season. This is no longer a disappointment to me. In fact, it makes perfect sense given what these awards have become compared to horror’s B-genre classification. Horror used to be considered only a notch below comedy. But, the comedy genre (when done artfully, intelligently or heartwarmingly enough) can actually still get elevated by Academy recognition—think Little Miss Sunshine or even this year’s American Hustle. I have no valid argument to put forth in a debate about whether horror films deserve mainstream industry accolades. I do, however, think they deserve to be considered in a similar way—why can’t an awards show exist that understands the genre...

If you’ve ever taken a look at my best movies of the year lists ( 2010 and 2012 to be specific), you know that I have an obscene amount of love for Greek director Yorgos Lanthimos. His Dogtooth and The Alps are weird little dramas that live up to their deliciously bizarre premises. Now he’s making his English-language debut with The Lobster. The film’s about a dystopian future where finding a life partner is a matter of life and death because if you don’t… you’ll be turned into an animal? Oh, Yorgos. I love your brain. Anyway, Colin Farrell and Rachel Weisz have boarded the production, joining Ben Whishaw, Lea Seydoux, Olivia Colman, Ariane Labed and Aggeliki Papoulia (who has starred in all Lanthimos’ films.) A little bit of star power can never hurt, especially if you’re trying to get people in the seats to watch a movie were people may be turned...
Read MoreBATMAN VS. SUPERMAN: Everything You Need To Know So Far…
Ever since it was announced at the end of summer in 2013, the upcoming Man of Steel sequel has sparked a lot of debate, from plot details to added characters and casting. This week it was announced that Jeremy Irons would take the role of Alfred, Bruce Wayne’s butler; the response from fans was wholly positive. It was also announced, however, that iconic Superman villain Lex Luthor would be helmed by Jessie Eisenberg, the star of The Social Network. Now this stirred mixed debate amongst fans. Why is there such a debate? Well it’s not that the fans think that Eisenberg is bad. He’s a great actor, but that doesn’t necessarily mean he is right for the role. He is not very charismatic; he always seems to play very fidgety, awkward roles. He’s not a millionaire businessman with a...
Read MoreJason Reitman’s LABOR DAY Avoids Being The Nicholas Sparks Movie It Could Have Been
A few weeks ago, I was at a screening of Young Adult with Jason Reitman in attendance. In the post-show QA, Reitman commented that the trailer for his then upcoming film Labor Day with Rhianna’s “Stay” playing on it made it look like a Nicholas Sparks adaptation. That was Reitman’s way of saying the film isn’t the same as a Sparks movie, but he’s only half right. Labor Day very well could have played out like any of the countless Sparks adaptations we’ve endured over the last few years. Its premise, a single mom and her son taken hostage by and then developing a family-like bond with an escaped convict over the long end-of-summer weekend, certainly makes it seem like it could be. Not with Reitman at the helm, though. Instead this motion picture plays out like a thriller,...
