I never really like the combination of David Fincher and Aaron Sorkin on The Social Network. The pair seemed so different, an aloof auteur director and an energetic auteur writer. But people over 35 at the time really thought the movie was something special because it confirmed all their sad assumptions about Millennials, so the film earned over $220 million at the global box office. Well, it looks like the pair are going to have a chance to take on another tech legend. (Or should I say the tech legend?) Do we finally have real solid Star Wars VII casting news? Looks like. Variety is reporting that and other sources like Deadline have confirmed that Girls star Adam Driver has been cast as the main villain in J.J. Abrams’s upcoming Star Wars sequel. While details are still sketchy, Variety’s sources are saying the actor, who was recently featured in the Coens’ Inside Llewyn Davis, is close to signing on the dotted line. Film critics around the world, including this one, have already expressed their adoration for Spike Jonze’s AI romance Her. But most of us can’t speak expertly about the actual subject matter like noted futurist Ray Kurzweil. Kurzweil, whose Age of the Spiritual Machines and The Singularity is Near have given us a glimpse of what our lives will be like with sentient artificial life all around us, put on his film critic cap last week announcing his approval for Jonze’s masterpiece.
