JURASSIC WORLD Concept Art Hits the Web

When Jurassic World was first announced, there were assumptions (including my own) that the film would get the dinosaurs off the island. Well, it didn’t take long for new rumors to come around that the film would take place on Isla Nublar, in a fully-functional dino attraction—where something goes terribly wrong Well, the International Business Times today, uncovered some concept art for the 21st Century Jurassic Park created by Nathan Schroeder, whose has done work for X-Men, Pirates of the Caribbean and Chronicles of Narnia, among other things. It’s pretty good, if less hokey than the park we saw in the 1993 film. Sleek, modern. Doesn’t look like Hammond’s creation for sure, but he isn’t in charge anymore. The Patel Corporation is. If I had to choose between the two, I’d hope it looks more like the second concept than the first. But it is...

Truly, Truly, Truly Outrageous! JEM AND THE HOLOGRAMS Movie A Go!

Posted by on Mar 24, 2014 in Big Mo, The Pictures | 1 comment

Eighties ladies and gays everywhere received the news we’ve long waited to hear on Friday when Hasbro, Blumhouse Prods, Justin Beiber’s manager Scooter Braun and director Jon M. Chu announced that we’re finally… finally… getting  a Jem and the Holograms movie. Hopefully Mr. Chu and company can capture the campy, kitschy spirit of the original show and apply it to the cartoon that inspired countless of drag queens. I honestly haven’t been this excited for a cartoon adaptation since Josie and the Pussycats got the big screen treatment. (For real. No sarcasm.) Though, I would be lying if I said I wanted to see Jem and the Holograms. I’m really in it for The Misfits, who were quite obviously the superior musical performers. It’s worth noting that Chu most recently directed an adaptation of every straight boy’s favorite 80s cartoon with G.I. Joe: Retaliation. But Chu also has Justin Beiber:...

LEGO MOVIE Filmmakers To Direct GHOSTBUSTERS 3?

Posted by on Mar 24, 2014 in The Pictures | 0 comments

The directing team behind The LEGO Movie, 21 Jump Street and Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs  may be about to cross their streams once more, this time for Sony’s Ghostbusters 3. According to the Wrap, Chris Miller and Phil Lord are in talks to direct the upcoming sequel to the 80s sci-fi/comedy franchise. Lord and Miller would be stepping in for Ivan Reitman who stepped aside after the death of Harold Ramis. If all goes as planned, the two will begin production on Ghostbusters 3 as early as this fall, though it could take until early 2015 to get everything in place. You know. Like a cast. But Etan Cohen’s script draft is ready to go, according to Reitman. And with directors like these guys, you know the property is in good...

Christian Bale Is David Fincher’s First Choice For Steve Jobs

Posted by on Mar 24, 2014 in The Pictures | 0 comments

You have Aaron Sorkin as your writer. You have David Fincher as your director. And you have Scott Rudin as your producer. How do you take a project that the eyes of the world will be watching and move it to the next level: Hire Christian Bale for the lead. The Wrap is reporting that the Oscar winner is David Fincher’s top choice for the role of Steve Jobs in the upcoming biopic from Sony. Bale, who most recently received an Oscar nomination for his role in American Hustle, is great playing larger-than-life personalities (and he can do an angry outburst like no other). He may have been born to play the great American innovator. I’ve been critical of Christian Bale in the past, because without a proper directorial hand, he can chew the scenery (see The Fighter). But Fincher...

Could Emmy Be Bigger Than Oscar?

Posted by on Mar 18, 2014 in Awards, Big News, The Tube | 0 comments

The day after watching 12 Years a Slave win Best Picture at the 86th Academy Awards, I sat down to watch the season finale of True Detective. The show had unfortunately aired against the Oscars, and I made the choice to watch some solid movies be declared “the best” in one category or another. The irony of it all: The real “best” everything was airing on HBO that night. This isn’t a new phenomenon. We’ve been talking about how television is better than film for years now. It’s something that started with The Sopranos and The Wire going on right up until Breaking Bad, Mad Men and True Detective. The storytelling is richer on TV these days and the productions more cinematic. Even the pop programs like Scandal, Arrow and Vampire Diaries are more entertaining than any comparable film....
