May’s Top Stories: Sad Batman

Posted by on May 26, 2014 in The Pictures | 0 comments

As down as I am on the whole Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice movie, I’ll never complain about Zack Snyder’s stylistic choices. When he tweeted the first picture of Batman and the Batmobile earlier this month, the Frank Miller-inspired Batsuit looked damn good. Check it out again: I shot this with my @Leica_Camera M Monochrom. #Batman #Batmobile #Gotham http://t.co/WPHKLxgBLM pic.twitter.com/p5DEf6fLzJ — ZackSnyder (@ZackSnyder) May 13, 2014 But as the internet does, it responded with one epic meme: Sad Batman. There have literally been hundreds (at least) of these memes put out there on the net. I won’t post them all here. The good folks over at NIS did a good enough job gathering the 50 of the greatest Sad Batman memes. But this one seems to be the most profound: While I have no confidence that the actual...

May’s Top Stories: Channing Tatum Will Play Gambit in Some X-Men Movie

Posted by on May 26, 2014 in The Pictures | 0 comments

Channing Tatum has been openly campaigning for the role of Gambit in the X-Menmovies since forever. (Word on the street is he had one hell of a Gambit inspired strip tease. #thingsimadeup) Now it looks like he’ll get his wish. X-producer Lauren Shuler Donner confirmed that Tatum will play the Ragin’ Cajun in an upcoming movie of some sort. Given that the film or films or whatever is one of many things in the works over at Fox in the Universe X, we probably won’t see him on the big screen as Remy LeBeau before Hillary Clinton takes the oath of office… a second time. But hey, it’s good news. For Tatum anyway. Meanwhile Taylor Kitsch is keeping his fingers crossed for a John Carter...

The Best Films Based on Video Games

Posted by on Apr 24, 2014 in The Pictures | 2 comments

In regard to video game based movies, our recent memory tragically only reminds us of the utter flops, the games that we wish had just stayed games. (Yes, the production team behind the Super Mario Bros. we’re looking at you.) Even with the Italian plumbing duo’s disappointing movie stint, it’s safe to say they have a solidified spot on the gaming hall of fame. Which makes for an even worse case for games which were not even good games! Who remembers the movie Double Dragon? I’m hoping none of you; it was terrible and showed by is marginal loss in the box office. Yet, who remembers the game Double Dragon? I’m sure some of you do, however that did not stop it from being one of the worst beat ‘em up to have been released in arcades. For the vast number...

The Foreign Mainstream: Why Cinema’s Biggest Oxymoron Deserves More

Posted by on Apr 24, 2014 in Big News, Movie Comment, The Pictures | 0 comments

When I was in Berlin, Germany for a few months last spring, I wasn’t sure what to expect when it came to movies, despite my understanding that Berlin has always been, to varying degrees over time, a major European film hub. I was there for the Berlinale International Film Festival, and there were art house cinemas all over the city as well, showing everything you’d expect an art house movie theater to show regardless of location, really. I saw a couple foreign films being shown at the festival, and they were good, don’t get me wrong, and I was expecting them to be good. But besides the art house, and the festival fair, and the American films dubbed into German (which played at every larger multiplex in the city), what did German audiences really watch, anyway? The question didn’t...

Harry Potter Series FANTASTIC BEASTS Will Be A Movie Trilogy

Posted by on Mar 31, 2014 in The Pictures | 0 comments

With The Hobbit winding down, Warner Bros. is turning to surefire fantasy cash cow Harry Potter for more movies that we first anticipated. The previously announced adaptation of J.K. Rowling’s Potter-verse book Fantastic Beasts & Where to Find Them is now set to become a movie trilogy, according to Warner’s C.E.O. In speaking with the New York Times, Kevin Tsujihara revealed plans for “three megamovies” with “magizoologist” New Scamander as the main character. The three films will be independent of the main Potter story arch, following Scamander in New York City seven decades prior to the events in the Harry Potter series. I haven’t read the book, unlike the other Potter novels, so I don’t know how this will precisely pan out. But if you think it’s worth a trilogy adaptation then let us know in the comments...

TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES Trailer Hits… And Fans Aren’t Happy

Posted by on Mar 28, 2014 in The Pictures | 0 comments

The Bay-ification of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles has been controversial ever since it was announced that Platinum Dunes would be in charge of the production. There have been highlights, like Will Arnett being cast as Vernon, and lowlights, like Jonathan Liebesman being the director to Michael Bay‘s producer. Then there’s the fan division over Shredder‘s new origin story. Well, now that the first trailer has hit the web, we have a better idea of what a Liebesman/Bay Turtles will look like, as well as a better idea of just how significantly Shredder’s story has shifted from the comics. Check it out: Many fans have reacted quite negatively to the idea that Shredder is a scientist who worked with April O’Neil’s father to create the ooze that transformed the turtles. Of course, it’s better than the aliens rumor that hit the web...
