Posted by on Jun 3, 2014 in The Pictures | 0 comments

With Star Wars VII filming underway and the initial cast announcement already out, J.J. Abrams already hard at work bringing the first in a sequel trilogy to the big screen. But that doesn’t mean the whole ensemble is rounded out. Today we learned that two additional female roles have been cast. Who are they? Lupita Nyong’o The Academy Award winning actress has long been rumored as a potential cast member, but now the 12 Years a Slave star is officially on board. Gwendoline Christie  Christie comes to Star Wars after making a huge splash on the fantasy series Game of Thrones. Neither actress has a role attached to the announcement, so feel free to speculate. Either of them would look pretty kick-ass with a lightsaber, though the stoic, regal Christie would fit right into a new galactic senate. The pair join the previously announce...

X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST Crosses $500M Worldwide, A Franchise Best, In Just 9 Days

Posted by on Jun 2, 2014 in Box Office | 2 comments

Holy snikt. X-Men: Days of Future Past just did something no X-Men film has ever done before: Crossed $500 million worldwide. The complexity of the storytelling, the collision of two X universes and one hell of a final action sequence are certainly just  a few of the things that make X-Men: Days of Future Past the most popular X-Men film, even if it’s not the best (that goes to First Class). But fans have fallen in love with the film. I even went as far as saying what they do is a bigger deal than what happened in The Avengers because it hit the hard reset button on the franchise and introduce the multiverse to superhero films in a way people can understand. Surprising as it may be that no other X franchise film hit the half billion dollar mark worldwide. Here’s...

Why I’m Supporting The American Genre Film Archive In Saving 35mm Film Prints

Posted by on May 31, 2014 in The Pictures | 14 comments

I don’t go to the Alamo Drafthouse’s Terror Tuesday or Weird Wednesday often enough. It’s a sad state of affair given the embarrassment of riches we filmlovers in Austin, Texas, enjoy. But I like knowing that they are available to me anytime I want. B-movies, 80s slashers, sexploitation films, Hollywood classics, old school kung-fu, biker flicks… all in 35mm.  It’s that last part that matters most. Cinema is film and film is cinema. Quentin Tarantino famously raged against the transition to digital at the Cannes Film Festival just a few weeks ago, saying: As far as I’m concerned, digital projection is the death of cinema… The fact that most films aren’t even presented in 35mm means that the war is lost. Digital projection is just television in public. And it’s true, watching a film in 35mm or 70mm or 16mm is...

Posted by on May 31, 2014 in The Pictures | 1 comment

UPDATE 2: And as quickly as word spread that Adam McKay was talking with Marvel, THR has reported that the Anchorman helmer has pulled out of Ant-Man negotiations because of commitments to other projects. UPDATE: It looks like it may be Adam McKay‘s job after all, with Deadline reporting that McKay’s reps and Marvel are hammering out the deal as I type this. I’m sure his association with Paul Rudd helped. ORIGINAL: After Edgar Wright‘s departure from Ant-Man, it was assumed that Marvel already had a director waiting in the wings. Well, according to The Wrap, Dodgeball  and We’re the Millers helmer Rawson Marshall Thurber might be that director. Nothing is official yet, as Marvel and Thurber’s reps have declined to comment on the matter. But considering the film is still scheduled to hit theaters on July 17, 2015, getting someone in the chair is a high priority for Disney. Thurber’s not the...

Who’s Voicing Thanos In The Marvel Cinematic Universe?

Posted by on May 30, 2014 in The Pictures | 0 comments

Ever since Thanos appeared in The Avengers post-credit sting, two questions have been on the minds of fans: when will we see him again and who will play him? For a while it was rumored that Vin Diesel would be the man behind the monster, and we speculated we’d see him next in The Avengers 3. Well, both things, like most rumblings on the internet, weren’t true. But today we’ve learned the answer to both questions. Latino Review is reporting and The Wrap is confirming that Josh Brolin will voice the Mad Titan in not only Guardians of the Galaxy, but also The Avengers: Age of Ultron and The Avengers 3. So we now know who and when… which leaves us to speculate why. Like why would Thanos appear in a movie dedicated to Ultron as the primary villain, especially after Whedon said Thanos...

Huge Upcoming Movies That Might Actually Be Terrible

Posted by on May 29, 2014 in The Pictures | 2 comments

Looking at the films that are slated to come out in the next year or so, there are a lot of big names that should make movie watchers quite excited. Big productions that come with big price tags are usually entertaining and bring in hundreds of millions; just look at X-Men: Days of Future Past which cleared nearly $300 million its first weekend. Movie fans are skeptical, however, that huge production value will keep leading to big numbers, and despite Marvel’s recent success at the box office, much of the internet speculates that upcoming titles are bound to be giant disappointments. Lets take a look at  Batman vs. Superman, which just got its amazing title Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Looking past whether the title is a total letdown already, there are many other reasons why people are worried...
