It’s wheels up for Up in the Air after the National Board of Review named it Best Film of the Year. Not only did it win, but with the exception of the director award, it was virtual sweep. Best Actor (tie), Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Supporting Actress, they all went to Up in the Air, too. That’s a rarity in the NBR world. There Will Be Blood‘s Paul Thomas Anderson is planning his next motion picture, and he wants Philip Seymour Hoffman to play his Master. Anderson is setting up the drama about the leader of a faith-based organization at Universal, Variety reports. Hoffman will play a character known as “The Master,” a charismatic intellectual who creates a religious group in the 1950s. (Modeled after Jim Jones?) The Master will take a yet-to-be-cast young man named Freddie under his wing, but Freddie will question his faith in both the Master and God when things go wrong. This untitled project will be Hoffman’s fifth picture with Anderson after Punch-Drunk Love, Magnolia, Boogie Nights and Hard Eight. The National Board of Review announces its annual winners tomorrow. Unless they pick something out of left field (Quills? Seriously?), we’ll know at least one of the Best Picture Oscar nominees tomorrow. So what film will take the NBR’s top prize? Up in the Air is where I’m putting my money.
