James Comeron’s Avatar easily beat Titanic‘s fourth weekend record with an estimated $48 million this past weekend. When the final tally came in today, Avatar cleared $50 million.  Yeah, I know. Holy cow. That brings Avatar to $430 million here in North America, with another $910 million in the bank from overseas. It’s already the second highest grossing film worldwide, standing at $1.34 billion.  Now, it’s within spitting distance of that $1.84 billion record that James Cameron’s last movie made more than a decade...

Sandra Bullock breaks a $200 million glass ceiling

Posted by on Jan 5, 2010 in Box Office | 0 comments

While Avatar continues to get great coverage based on its big box office, Variety took some time out to let everyone know that there’s another, maybe more significant, box office milestone that was hit last weekend. From Variety: Some time over the weekend, Bullock starrer The Blind Side became the first pic in history driven solely by a top female star to jump the $200 million mark at the domestic B.O. To be precise, the film finished the frame with a cume of $208.5 million in its seventh week in release. Over the weekend, it rose a remarkable 10% over the previous week, and it’s still got plenty of life left, according to Warner Bros. prexy of domestic distribution Dan Fellman. Could Sandra’s sudden success result in Oscar? Maybe. Oscar certainly loves a good story. Sandra’s a shoo-in for...

AVATAR joins the $1 billion club after just 17 days

On Sunday, James Cameron’s Avatar became just the fifth movie in history to gross over $1 billion, and it did it in just two weeks and three days. Avatar took in $68 million at the domestic box office this weekend, bringing its total gross in North America to $352.1 million. Overseas the picture grossed another $133.5 million for a total of $670.2. What’s $352.1 million + $670.2 million kids? $1.02 billion, that’s right! Avatar will likely become the second-highest grossing film worldwide next weekend, if not sooner. Even if Avatar can’t pass Titanic at the domestic box office, now is when we can seriously start talking about it sinking Titanic‘s long-standing worldwide record as the highest grossing film of all-time. Billion dollar club (via Box Office Mojo): 1     Titanic $1.8 billion 2     The Lord of the Rings:...

AVATAR hits $250 million, $726 million worldwide

Posted by on Dec 30, 2009 in Box Office | 0 comments

Avatar didn’t hit $250 million domestically more quickly than any other movie. It’s only No. 6 on the list. But James Cameron’s picture, which crossed the quarter billion mark yesterday, is showing staying power. Only The Dark Knight had better daily Tuesday gross, but that was on The Dark Knight‘s first Tuesday out. Yesterday, Avatar hit $18.3 million on its second Tuesday–up from $16.1 million the week before. Add on the $476 million the picture made overseas (already more than The Dark Knight) and you have a bona fide international sensation that has grossed more than $726 million in just 12 days. By the end of Avatar‘s run, Cameron will undoubtedly be able to claim the first AND second highest grossing films in motion picture history. Right now, I’m not even going to think about which one will be...

Domestic box office to hit the $10 billion mark

Posted by on Dec 23, 2009 in Box Office | 0 comments

Santa will be delivering quite a present to Hollywood execs.  The domestic box office will cross the $10 billion mark for the first time on Tuesday. People were talking about this as earlier as April when Fast and Furious opened to $70.9 million. Even My Bloody Valentine in 3D and Coraline (also in 3D) opened big enough in January and February to get the chatter going. Yes, 3D matters, as those movies and now Avatar are proving. And IMAX screens certainly helped too. (See Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen.) Diversifying formats seems to have made the biggest difference, considering there was no The Dark Knight this year. Not even close. From Reuters: Through Sunday, the total U.S. and Canadian box office stood just $36 million short of crossing the $10 billion mark, said tracking firm Hollywood.com Box Office. Posted by on Dec 21, 2009 in Box Office | 0 comments

While the U.S. box office may have been down because of the blizzard on the East Coast, Avatar managed to pull in $232 million worldwide, a record for an original work. The $73 million domestic gross combined with $159 million overseas means that Avatar is now a certified blockbuster. Word of mouth is going to be strong with this one. Combine that with some of the biggest metros in the U.S. remaining untapped markets and the coming wave of holiday moviegoers, and you get a movie that’s going to be huge for weeks to come. UPDATE: Looks like the snow didn’t keep away as many moviegoers as 2oth Century Fox expected. The final domestic tally for Avatar‘s opening weekend is $77.3 million, according to Variety. That’s just enough to give Avatar the biggest December opening of all-time, ahead of...
