2010 Documentary Feature Oscar shortlist announced

Where many of the narrative features have failed this year, documentaries have succeeded. Anyone who has seen Davis Guggenheim’s Waiting for Superman can attest to that. The last 10 or 15 minutes of the film are packed with more drama than any of  the live action film I’ve seen this year. In fact, it’s on par with those final moments in Toy Story 3. Now 15 films have been selected as potential nominees for the Best Documentary Feature Oscar. The 2010 Animated Feature Oscar race isn’t much of a race. Toy Story 3 should take this Oscar in a walk. But there are still 14 other animated features competing for a nomination. Sofia Coppola’s SOMEWHERE takes top honors at Venice

Sofia Coppola’s fourth film, Somewhere, took home the Golden Lion at this year’s Venice Film Festival. The film about a Hollywood star whose 11-year-old daughter shows up on his doorstep and forces him to reconsider his life of excess was a surprise winner at the lackluster fest. I don’t think I’m the only one who was excited when it was announced that Alec Baldwin and Steve Martin were going to be the co-hosts of the 82nd Academy Awards.
