National Society of Film Critics picks THE HURT LOCKER
Other than Paul Schneider popping up in the Supporting Actor category, no real surprises from the National Society of Film Critics this year. The Hurt Locker took the picture, director and actor awards, leaving scraps for all the other films released this year. Variety does point out that this is the first time the since L.A. Confidential that a film has swept top honors from Los Angeles, New York, and national critics. Oddly enough, that was also the year Avatar-director James Cameron saw his film Titanic go on the win big on Oscar night. I’m not saying that’s going to be the case again this year, but it’s something to think about this morning. Confession: I have never watched the Broadcast Film Critics Association’s Critics’ Choice Awards. No, seriously. Never. I listened to the audio one year while I working at a radio station and airing commercials during football games. (Old school, I know.) That was when I was in college. Since then I’ve just never found the show entertaining enough to watch, what with the instant updates I get from Oscar blogs. Say what you will about the Golden Globes, but at least watching that show is a good time for sure. Fortunately, I obsessively follow Kristin Chenoweth’s Twitter (@KChenoweth). And her latest tweet informed followers that she is going to host the Critics’ Choice Awards this year. First of all, awesome. Second of all, if they don’t have Ms. Chenoweth do an opening musical number that puts Hugh Jackman’s Oscar...

In August, if you would have asked Oscarwatchers whether or not Inglourious Basterds would be a frontrunner for the Best Picture Oscar, you would have heard a chorus of “NOs.” What a difference a week makes. After BFCA, HFPA and most shockingly the SAG all nominated Quentin Tarantino’s masterpiece for their top honor, it’s safe to say Inglourious Basterds is solidly in the Best Picture race. The Hurt Locker, too, is sweeping nearly every critics group award, making the film a lock for a Best Picture nomination and putting Kathryn Bigelow out in front in Best Director race. Then there’s Up in the Air, a film that seems destined to win Best Picture but curiously missed out on an Ensemble nomination from the SAG. All its primaries grabbed SAG nominations, but its weak supporting cast (compared to the nominated...

Don’t ask me how it happened, but Up in the Air missed out on a Best Ensemble nomination when the Screen Actors Guild announced the SAG Award nominees this morning. At this point, I’d like to point out that only Braveheart has ever gone on to win Best Picture at the Oscars without a SAG Ensemble nomination–and that was the SAG Awards’ inaugural year. One things is for sure: Things are certainly looking up for The Hurt Locker. From AwardsDaily: Best Ensemble An Education The Hurt Locker Inglourious Basterds Nine Precious Best Actress Sandra Bullock, The Blind Side Helen Mirren, The Last Station Carey Mulligan, An Education Gabby Sidibe, Precious Meryl Streep, Julie & Julia Best Actor Jeff Bridges, Crazy Heart George Clooney, Up in the Air Colin Firth, A Single Man Morgan Freeman, Invictus Jeremy Renner, The Hurt...

After yesterday’s ridiculous AFI list, it’s nice to see that the Broadcast Film Critics Association is in tune with both Oscar and the culture at large. The BFCA is still a critics group, of course. I wouldn’t bet on seeing all ten of their nominees in the Best Picture race. But any group that doesn’t honor The Hangover automatically carries more clout in the long run. BEST PICTURE Nominees: • Avatar • An Education • The Hurt Locker • Inglourious Basterds • Invictus • Nine • Precious • A Serious Man • Up • Up In The Air Full list after the jump. BEST ACTOR Nominees: • Jeff Bridges – Crazy Heart • George Clooney – Up In The Air • Colin Firth – A Single Man • Morgan Freeman – Invictus • Viggo Mortensen – The Road •...
