Cowabunga! A new live-action Ninja Turtles movie is on the way
“We’re excited to bring this story to a whole new generation of moviegoers as well as the legions of fans that have made the Turtles – Leonardo, Michelangelo, Donatello, and Raphael as well as Splinter, April O’Neil, Casey Jones and, of course, the great villain Shredder – a part of their world for 25 years.”–Scott Mednick, producer. Okay, I’m a bad Ninja Turtles fan. I didn’t know that the Ninja Turtles were turning 25 years old this year. But the announcement of a new movie is one way to get my attention. I was afraid I’d completely forgotten about the Turtles when I tried to block out any memory of a certain craptastic computer animated movie. I’m willing to give Mirage Studios a mulligan on that one though. Trying to reboot a franchise is tough. Just ask the guys...
Read MoreMore The Lovely Bones from USA Today
Following Empire Online’s first look at Peter Jackson’s The Lovely Bones, USA Today posted the first image of Susie’s murderer, George Harvey. Most importantly, the very grim sounding story is put in the proper perspective thanks to comments from Jackson. Here’s what he told USA Today: “I found the book to be curiously optimistic,” Jackson says by e-mail from New Zealand, where he’s finishing the film. “I felt inspired by Susie’s struggle to come to terms with her own death. In the face of overwhelming grief, she finds hope.” The Lovely Bones hits theaters on Dec....
Read MoreEmpire gives first look at Jackson’s The Lovely Bones
I only read The Lovely Bones after learning that Peter Jackson planned to direct the motion picture adaptation. As I was reading it, I immediately began to picture the events in the book through the filter of Jackson’s cinematic eye. This first image, posted over at Empire Online, is EXACTLY what I was expecting. And I couldn’t be more thrilled about it. Click to Go To Empire’s Big Picture Page That’s Saoirse Ronan as Susie Salmon, the girl who watches her family grieve over her rape and murder from heaven. Jackson is a filmmaker, like David Fincher, who can use techonology as another tool in his storytelling arsenal. I can’t wait to see his take on heaven, but I’m also eager to see him direct Mark Wahlberg (Susie’s father), Rachel Weisz (Susie’s mother), and Stanley Tucci (Mr. Harvey, Susie’s...
Read MoreOne more reason ‘Watchmen’ will suck: My Chemical Romance’s ‘Desolation Row’
If you ever needed proof that the Watchmen adaptation is going to be an epic failure, look no further than the decision to have My Chemical Romance cover Bob Dylan’s “Desolation Row” for the picture. I was totally prepared for Zack Snyder to gut Alan Moore’s text, but Bob Dylan, too! I guess if you didn’t want to kill yourself by the end of Synder’s bastardized Watchmen, you’ll now have extra incentive when MCR’s Dylan cover plays over the credits. This make my soul...
Read MoreYear in Review – Top Ten Films of 2008
One of the problems with living in a place like Cleveland (or Erie, Pa. before this) and not in NYC or LA is that you don’t get to see all the movies of 2008 until it’s 2009. I’ve always given myself an extra month to catch up. Considering the lackluster year it’s been for movies, it’s no surprise that I could have published this list a few weeks ago. (Damn you Fox Searchlight for holding back The Wrestler.) It’s also no surprise that a three-and-a-half star movie made it onto my list for the first time since I started compiling them. That would Woody Allen’s best film in years, Vicky Christina Barcelona. But even in bad years, there are certain movies that you fall in love with. I can’t remember caring about the characters in the movies as much...
Read MoreIs Ryan Gosling the Green Lantern?
The amazingly accurate Latino Review is reporting that Warner Bros. wants Ryan Gosling to be their Hal Jordan. Let the fanboy revolt commence. Gosling doesn’t look like the guy you’d cast as the Green Lantern, but he fits Warner’s grand vision for their superhero franchises. He’s a deeply emotional actor, whose turn in Half Nelson established him as one of the best actors of his generation. And remember, the last time Warner made this bold a choice, they cast Heath Ledger as the Joker. A Gosling Lantern shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone who has followed the project, though. The film was going to go in a slightly different direction after Greg Berlanti (Everwood, Brothers & Sisters) was brought on to direct. With Gosling under the direction of Berlanti, The Green Lantern may be the first superhero movie...
