Huge Upcoming Movies That Might Actually Be Terrible
Looking at the films that are slated to come out in the next year or so, there are a lot of big names that should make movie watchers quite excited. Big productions that come with big price tags are usually entertaining and bring in hundreds of millions; just look at X-Men: Days of Future Past which cleared nearly $300 million its first weekend. Movie fans are skeptical, however, that huge production value will keep leading to big numbers, and despite Marvel’s recent success at the box office, much of the internet speculates that upcoming titles are bound to be giant disappointments.
Lets take a look at Batman vs. Superman, which just got its amazing title Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Looking past whether the title is a total letdown already, there are many other reasons why people are worried about the upcoming film. Obviously, the biggest news on the internet is the choice of Ben Affleck as Batman, which became such a big controversy that people gave it its own name, “Batfleck.” Many fans are worried his performance will turn out to be as rock solid as the acting in Daredevil, which grossed a meager $179 million, putting its $80 million budget to shame.
Other casting choices aren’ttoo popular either, and people are worried about the choice of Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, many stating that she is “too small” to play the part, as well as Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor, who just seems wrong in all sorts of ways. Too young, too hairy, too quiet, the list goes on. Whether or not Henry Cavill can save this cast remains to be seen, and the producers have a long way to go if they mean to please their fans.
Batman and Superman are some of the biggest names in the comic book world, and have spawned entire franchises of collectibles. There is the Arkham series of Batman video games, popular TV series like Smallville, and Betfair even has games for Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman. The massive success of the comic book world, and its resounding impact on popular culture, is bittersweet at times. Expectations of Marvel and DC are at an all time high, and while Marvel is enjoying the success of its recent Captain America film, everyone is looking to DC to see what it can offer to compete. Given the heights that the hype surrounding Batman v Superman has reached an entire year before the film’s debut, it might be impossible for DC to live up to its fan’s expectations.
Whether or not DC can pull off another Dark Knight and surprise us all will be interesting, but many people do not have their hopes up. The same is true for other films, too. Transformers: Age of Extinction is set to release in a month, and recent trailers make it look about as deep as the first Transformers remake. While most people don’t expect much more out of Michael Bay than explosions, cars, and girls, it is disappointing for people who want more out of the series. Searching for an intricate plot will likely leave fans wanting, once again, and so far car manufacturers are more excited for this film than moviegoers.
While Fast & Furious 7 is definitely a full on action flick, the death of star Paul Walker has left the movie in a tight spot. While filming for the movie has not ceased, the cast requires the addition of both of Paul’s brothers to play his character properly. This shoots production cost up quite a bit, and along with the delays the filming has experienced, fans have to hope the movie does not end up running out of resources. There is also the obvious issue of what to do with the character of Brian, and simply killing him off would be a little too insensitive at this point. With a rewrite to the script also an addition to the host of problems the movie faced, sportscar fanatics have to keep their fingers crossed on this one.
There are tons of other movies that have tens if not hundreds of millions pumped into them coming out in the next several months. They won’t all be failures, some of them might be the best movies of this year and be remembered for decades to come. However, many of them also carry high expectations due to their enormous production value, and we’re all hoping to simply not be too let down in the second half of this year.
