Did the New York Film Critics Circle just give us a glimpse into Oscar future?

The org’s picks for Best Picture lined up with Oscar less than 50 percent of the time in the last 10 years, but it’s the split between Best Picture and Best Director from today’s awards announcement that I’m staring at here.

David O. Russell’s much more Oscar friendly American Hustle took home the award for Best Picture from the NYFCC, which is the first of many Oscar precursors to come. But Steve McQueen, whose 12 Years a Slave is being touted as the frontrunner at the moment, took home the Best Director award. That’s split, the mainstream choice for picture and the more “artistic” choice for director is a common one. (Artistic in quotes because I kind of hate 12 Years a Slave.)

ANYWAY, here’s the full list of winners:

• Best Picture: American Hustle
• Best Actor: Robert Redford, All Is Lost
• Best Actress: Cate Blanchett, Blue Jasmine
• Best Director: Steve McQueen, 12 Years a Slave
• Best Supporting Actress: Jennifer Lawrence, American Hustle
• Best Foreign Language Film: Blue Is the Warmest Color
• Best Supporting Actor: Jared Leto, Dallas Buyers Club
• Best Animated Film: The Wind Rises
• Best Screenplay: American Hustle
• Best Cinematography: Bruno Delbonnel, Inside Llewyn Davis
• Best First Film: Fruitvale Station
• Best Documentary: Stories We Tell

The National Board of Review announces tomorrow, so stay tuned. I’m going to update my predictions accordingly once the dust settles from the first big awards announcements.
