Our great hope of seeing a big screen reboot with the Mortal Kombat: Rebirth and Legacy director at the helm have been dashed. Kevin Tancharoen, the man who turned a fan film into two seasons of a Mortal Kombat web series,  took to Twitter to let fans know that he’s finished.

There’s no explanation given as to why Tancharoen dropped out, but fans should certainly mourn this loss. He’s the whole reason we’re even talking about the possibility of a new Mortal Kombat movie. After all, Tancharoen’s web series gave new life to a franchise that has had little success in cinemas. (Though, one could argue that Mortal Kombat: Annihilation is one of the best bad movies you’ll ever see.)

So will there be a movie at all? And what happens to the successful web series when it goes for season three? The answer to both of those questions won’t likely please fans. But if Tancharoen left the project to make his gritty Power Rangers short, then it may be all worth it.
