Would you believe that Stanley Kubrick wanted to make a sequel to Dr. Strangelove? Well, it could have happened, and Kubrick set his sights on Brazil‘s Terry Gilliam to direct the picture. This little bit of trivia was dropped in Twitch Film’s lap when speaking with Gilliam at the Sitges Film Festival.

From Twitch:

I was told after Kubrick died – by someone who had been dealing with him – that he had been interested in trying to do another Strangelove with me directing. I never knew about that until after he died but I would have loved to

Terry Southern, who wrote the script for Strangelove, even started working on an outline for the film, which would have been titled Son of Strangelove

I loved A.I., but if I had to choose, I would have rather seen Gilliam take on a post-Reagan Era Strangelove. There’s just so much potential there. I can only hope that my alternate in the other universe is enjoying the film right now.
