Disney Confirms STAR WARS Origin Story Films, Learning Nothing From The Prequels Or X-MEN
Between the prequels and X-Men‘s ill-fated attempt an Origins series, you would think that Disney would know better. But yesterday at an investor conference, Disney chief financial officer Jay Rasulo told investors that “of all our worries, Star Wars is not one of them.” Why not? Because in a move that totally makes sense unless you actually like movies/Star Wars, Disney is going to ramp up the merchandising machine… with Star Wars origin story films.
Rasulo confirmed rumored plans to have a new movie and a boring origin story movie on alternating years. From Variety:
Rasulo also noted that one “Star Wars” trilogy film or “origin story film” would also appear on the release schedule each year, starting with the seventh installment in the “Star Wars” saga that J.J. Abrams will direct and Disney releases in 2015.
Considering the creative bankruptcy that we’re seeing in the Pixar world, and knowing that Disney isn’t taking any creative chances with Star Wars (they hired J.J. Abrams, after all), the origin stories will probably be just as unnecessary and un-fun as the prequels. I mean, those movies were basically one long, torturous Darth Vader origin story.
Some Star Wars fans may welcome the news. And maybe, just maybe, Kathleen Kennedy will be a creative force like Kevin Feige is for Marvel, demanding movies that don’t may your ass itch. But for everyone who is excited about this news today, I don’t want to hear one word when Zac Efron or Ryan Gosling plays Han Solo. Because that’s probably what you’re going to get.
