THE FLASH Set To Become A CW Series?
While the folks over at Warner Bros. are struggling to get the big screen DC Universe right, the CW and Warner Bros. Television seem to know exactly what they’re doing. The breakout success of Arrow, which is probably the best live-action DC adaptation since Batman Begins, has inspired WBTV and the CW to launch the Flash on that series in preparation for a show of his own.
According to Deadline, the plan is to introduce Barry Allen, the scientist who becomes the Flash after a lightning/chemical cocktail, as a recurring character on Greg Berlanti and Andrew Kreisberg’s Arrow, then eventually spin him off on his own show. Director David Nutter, who helmed Arrow‘s pilot along with episodes of Game of Thrones and The X-Files, is set to return as well.
So why is this good news, considering DC just announced a Flash movie as part of the lead up to Justice League? Two reasons really.
The first is obvious. Berlanti, Kreisberg and Nutter have better managed their little world in the DC universe than even Christopher Nolan. (I firmly believe that if Nutter had directed the Berlanti-scripted Green Lantern movie starring Ryan Reynolds instead of Martin Campbell, we’d have a Green Lantern franchise on our hands already.) Arrow‘s success is a testament to this talented team… a team that unlike, say Nolan and Goyer, actually likes the comic books.
Second is simply this: When the DC cinematic universe fails, as it inevitably will, we’ll still have a chance to see the DC heroes used properly in a live-action adaptation.
It’s probably a pipe dream to hope that this means DC’s television and film properties will merge into one live- action universe. These are the people who have woefully mismanaged their most valuable properties for going on two decades, with the exception of Bruce Timm’s animated universe. Still, that could be a possibility. But given WB’s history with the DC heroes, believing they could be that foresighted is giving them way too much credit.
