Back in 1968, Lee Savage and Milton Glaser (the graphic designer who created the iconic “I ♥ NY” logo) produced an underground anti-war short featuring Mickey Mouse joining the army and going to Vietnam. And in a shocking twist, Mickey ends up dead from a gunshot wound to the head.

Over at BuzzFeed, Glaser was interviewed about the video and here’s what he said about choosing to use Mickey Mouse in the short:

Well, obviously Mickey Mouse is a symbol of innocence, and of America, and of success, and of idealism — and to have him killed, as a solider is such a contradiction of your expectations. And when you’re dealing with communication, when you contradict expectations, you get a result.

You can watch the short film below or head over to BuzzFeed for the full interview with Glaser.
