Laurence Fishburne is Perry White in Snyder’s SUPERMAN

Well, here’s a bit of out-of-left-field casting for you. EW reports that Academy Award nominee and all-around awesome actor Laurence Fishburne has been cast as Perry White in Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel.

Tapping Fishburne warms this Superman fan’s heart, not because of the color-blind casting (been there done that with Michael Clarke Duncan’s Kingpin), but because my love for one Laurence Fishburne runs true and deep. (Still think he was snubbed for his performance in Akeelah and the Bee.) Sure, I like Frank Langella fine in Superman Returns, but he never really took the character anywhere. Played it safe. Fishburne might do great things here, depending on the size of the role.

So now we have  Henry Cavill as Supes, Amy Adams as Lois Lane, Michael Shannon as Zod, and Kevin Costner and Diane Lane as Pa and Ma Kent, with the surprising, but inspired casting of Fishburne as Perry White.

I said it before, every time a piece of news about this project comes out, I get more excited than I probably should. It’s a Zack Snyder picture after all. Maybe, just maybe, producer Christopher Nolan’s guiding hand will turn this into the Superman film we’ve been waiting for.

Man of Steel hits theaters on June 14, 2013.
