Sherlock’s New Nemesis Revealed! Who Is It?
Despite Benedict Cumberbatch being one of the hottest actors in Hollywood right now (he’s involved in no less than three big Oscar contenders this year, in addition to his role as Khan in Star Trek Into Darkness) and Martin Freeman being busy with The Hobbit franchise, the BBC has managed to get the pair back for a third season Sherlock.
For two seasons, Holmes and Watson have squared off against Moriarty in the cult TV show which sets the adventures in contemporary London. But Sherlock will have a new nemesis in season three: Charles Augustus Magnussen. The news was announced on Twitter last night by Sherlock producer Sue Vertue, who also revealed that Mangussen will be played by the Danish actor and star of the original The Killing series Lars Mikkelsen.
But who is Magnussen? Well, given the character’s first and middle names he’s almost surely Charles Augustus Milverton, the notorious London blackmailer in Sir Author Conan Doyle’s short The Adventure of Charles Augustus Milverton. Milverton was so reviled by Holmes that the detective even considered Milverton worse than the murderers he’s faced in his career. Milverton, in turn, was inspired by real-life blackmailer Charles Augustus Howell.
