Does The Shredder Have A New Origin In Liebesman’s NINJA TURTLES?
Other than thinking that William Fichtner would be a badass Shredder in Jonathan Liebesman’s Teenage Mutant Ninjat Turtles, one other thing popped into my head when he confirmed his role, “Dude isn’t Asian.” Well, we may now have reason to believe that it’s all part of the plan: A new Shredder origin, perhaps.
In a ScreenRant interview, Fichtner mentioned that he wasn’t play the man traditionally know as Oroku Saki but someone else:
“I actually play a guy named Eric Sachs [Sounds like Sachs? Hard to understand] in the movie. And then he goes through a few stages in his existence.”
Fichnter went on to add:
“But Turtles is coming together very, very cool. There is a whole interesting dynamic that happens in the world of Turtles and all I can really say about it at this point while working on it is that the Turtle film, it’s not like anything that I remember about the Turtles before. I feel like this Michael Bay-produced movie is just gonna really be something else. I’m pretty excited.”
As ScreenRant continues to point out, an early draft of the script had the Shredder as military leader with an army known as The Foot. So who is Eric Sachs, then?
All things being equal, a new Shredder origin is nothing compared to what Burton did to The Joker’s “origin” in the 1989 Batman film. So despite being a life long Turtles fan, I’m rather interested to see this new take on a villain who is getting to be about as tired as Lex Luthor. As long as the Turtles are still mutants (and not aliens), then bring it on.
