Director Joe Johnston Signs Up for ‘Captain America’
Marvel Studios is at it again. Joe Johnston has signed on to direct The First Avenger: Captain America.
From Marvel Studios:
Joe Johnston has signed on to direct Marvel Studios’ The First Avenger: Captain America based on characters developed by Jack Kirby and Joe Simon. The film will be produced by Marvel Studios’ President Kevin Feige. Executive Producers on the project are Louis D’Esposito, Stan Lee and Marvel Studios’ Chairman David Maisel. Paramount Pictures will distribute The First Avenger: Captain America worldwide. The film will come to theaters domestically on May 6, 2011.
Johnston, a competent director with a history of enjoyable, but unexceptional films, fits the Marvel mold to a tee. Moreover, his work on effects heavy mini-blockbusters like Hidalgo and The Rocketeer (I’m intentionally leaving out Jurassic Park III) means he an pull off the required period action.
It’s odd that such an unexciting director can make me this excited for a picture, but he seems so perfect, you wonder why no one threw his name out there before today.
