Will Johnny Depp Play Marvel’s Dr. Strange?
UPDATE: Deadline is reporting that Marvel reps are denying the rumor that Johnny Depp will play Dr. Strange. Smoke screen or real talk? We shall see.
ORIGINAL: Marvel may still be in Phase 2, but if we’ve learned anything from the MCU, it’s that they plan ahead. Way ahead. And we’ve already heard that Dr. Strange may just be the anchor film for the Phase 3.
So who you gonna call when you need a megastar to hold down the fort? If Marvel has it’s way, it may be Johnny Depp.
The Latino Review is reporting a rumor (sigh) that Depp is now the frontrunner for the role of Strange in the upcoming film adaptation, which presumably hits theaters in 2016. And if you look at strange:
And you look at Depp:
Well, you know he fits the part like a god damn glove.
According to the report, the script would have to be retooled to fit Depp because it’s written for a 30-year-old strange. (Depp is 50. Seriously. 50.) It seems like a case of being too good to be true. And we all know that Marvel has been a little thrifty when it comes to actor salaries. However, if you need an anchor, you gotta pay for it. And with Depp, who already has a history with Disney and is licking his wounds a bit thanks to The Lone Ranger, it may just be the right timing.
We’ll wait and see how this pans out, but if Depp is Strange, Disney and Marvel just upped the MCU stakes big time.
