Cinematic Spidey-Verse Officially Expands With SINISTER SIX and VENOM Flicks
Not one month ago did we learn that Sony had big plans for a Cinematic Spidey-verse. Now we’re getting a clearer, more official picture of just how this grand plan will play out.
Sony has announced that it has hired a group of writers and directors to shepherd characters along on the path to an expanded universe. Following in the footsteps of Marvel and Fox’s X-Men, Sony will launch pictures around some of the most memorable characters from the Spider-Man comics, including the Sinister Six (as was previously rumored) and Venom.
The Venom picture will be written by Transformers and Star Trek scribes Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, as well as Men in Black screenwriter Ed Solomon. Kurtzman is set to helm the picture, in only his second outing as a film director.
On the Sinister Six side of things, Whedon-ite and recently announced Daredevil writer/producer Drew Goddard will write and possibly direct the villain team-up picture. (Could he marry the Spidey-verse with the Marvel-verse???)
That brings the Spidey creative team up to seven, with Avi Arad, Matt Tolmach and Marc Webb all still involved.
Interestingly, this will be the first time that any of the major comic book adaptations is solely dedicated to villains. Despite many an attempt to get Magneto off the ground and the rumored but nowhere near real Loki picture, no other franchise has really waded in the waters of big budget baddie pics. (Catwoman excluded… for good reason.) That’s another thing DC could learn from Marvel properties, given that DC’s villains are much more interesting than most of Marvel’s.
All I know is I’m excited to see how this pans out, especially after this trailer for The Amazing Spider-Man 2. What do you think?
