Ben Affleck Was “Reluctant” To Play Batman
To all the fans who weren’t sold on Ben Affleck doning the cape and cowl, even the actor was hesitant about taking on the iconic DC comic character in Batman Vs. Superman.
In speaking with 411mania.com, Affleck described how he finally came to the decision to play the Bat in Zack Snyder’s upcoming sequel to Man of Steel:
Initially I was reluctant as I felt I didn’t fit the traditional mold but once Zack showed me the concept, and that it would be both different from the great movies that Chris and Christian made but still in keeping with tradition I was excited. Doing something different and new is always tricky and part of the thrill and the risk is that initially it confounds expectations. The truth is, it’s the movie and the execution of it is what all the actors depend on and I believe in Zack’s vision.
The actor, who inspired such memes as this one, is hardly a fan favorite. But Affleck, who said Warner Brothers CEO Kevin Tsujihara aptly describe his Batman as “tired and weary and seasoned,” isn’t going to be the traditional big screen Batman.
If WB pulls this off with Affleck then the sky is the limit for a DC Cinematic Universe. If not, then we’re heading into Green Lantern territory. But given that we’re a year and a half away from seeing the movie, it’s hard to speculate on just how good or bad Affleck will really be. He’s got Argo clout to burn in my book. But it’s risky, as Affleck said. Though, what’s life without a little risk, eh?
