THE WOLF OF WALL STREET & GOODFELLAS: Martin Scorsese’s Best Double Feature Yet
Martin Scorsese has two tendencies: the first is to make films that all follow a thematic or stylistic pattern, building off of one another and forming a canon of work that has since proved him to be a great auteur. Then there’s his tendency to break away from that and make something seemingly totally different than any of those defining films but which still, to varying extents perhaps, appeal to the masses. But where does his new film, The Wolf of Wall Street, fit in? It is one of the funniest films he’s ever made, in my opinion, and it isn’t necessarily violent, not in the traditional sense anyway. But, when paired with 1990’s Goodfellas, Scorsese’s main stylistic techniques and of course his thematic focuses are really made apparent. And this is by no means a negative pairing I’m...

Did you ever wonder what a Lars Von Trier Christmas movie would look like? Me either. That is until the good folks over at Four Ground Media put together a sampling of Christmas morning scenes as if they were directed by some of world’s leading filmmakers in The Auteurs of Christmas. There’s Steven Spielberg with a heart warming family moments (including a big hug from dad), Woody Allen with a minute of kvetching about parade traffic backups, and Werner Herzog with a narration of a family opening presents as a metaphor for the current state of the economy. And yes, Martin Scorsese and Wes Anderson are there, too. Lar Von Trier’s my favorite bit. But Baz Luhrmann is a close second. Watch and let us know which one is your...
Read MoreScorsese’s WOLF OF WALL STREET Will Get A Christmas Day Release
Ah, nothing says Merry Christmas like fraudulent investments. They are the gifts that keep on giving after all. Still, it’s good news for Martin Scorsese and Paramount Pictures that, after publicly acknowledging that The Wolf of Wall Street wouldn’t hit its November release date because of a spat over the length of the picture, the Leonardo DiCaprio starrer will hit theaters in 2014 after all. Paramount made it official today, with Deadline reporting they have staked their claim on Dec. 25 for the latest Scorsese-DiCaprio collaboration. This means that after much speculation the film will be released in 2013 in time for Oscar. Does this shake up a race? Probably not much with 12 Years a Slave and Gravity way out in front at this point. But never underestimate the power of Martin...
Read MoreWill Scorsese’s THE WOLF OF WALL STREET Move To 2014?
It looks like The Wolf of Wall Street may pull a Shutter Island and move out of Oscar contention for a prime spot in early 2014. At least that’s a possibility now that Martin Scorsese’s adaptation of Wall Street broker Jordan Belfort’s best-selling memoir is running 180 minutes long and needs some editing to make any 2013 release date. According to THR, The Wolf of Wall Street is likely to shift its release from Nov. 15 to Christmas Day to give the legendary filmmaker a chance to tighten the film. That move would push Paramount’s Jack Ryan off until early 2014. Of course, there’s always the chance that The Wolf of Wall Street could remove itself from awards season contention all together, much like Scorsese’s Shutter Island did four years ago. That movie shifted from Oct. 2, 2009, to Feb. 19, 2010, giving Paramount more time for promotion and in the...
