What Does James Cameron Think Of Alfonso Cuarón’s GRAVITY?

Posted by on Sep 4, 2013 in The Pictures | 0 comments

James Cameron is no stranger to either space pictures or 3D. But even this technical movie-making master couldn’t contain himself when it comes to Alfonso Cuarón’s space thriller Gravity, starring Sandra Bullock and George Clooney. Cameron, a friend of Cuarón’s,  saw the film about a month ago at a private screening. Variety caught up with Cameron and asked him what he thought about the picture. Here’s what the king of the world had to say: “I was stunned, absolutely floored,” he says. “I think it’s the best space photography ever done, I think it’s the best space film ever done, and it’s the movie I’ve been hungry to see for an awful long time.” Now there’s a quote you really want to have on your posters. Cameron has taken us to space more than once. He’s the man who made 3D...

It looks like revisiting Alien with his upcoming film Prometheus isn’t enough. Ridley Scott is going back to the well one more time, agreeing to direct a “follow-up” to his seminal sci-fi classic Blade Runner. (Deadline) Maestro Brian De Palma may not have directed a decent thriller in decades, but that doesn’t me he’ll stop trying. The once (and future?) maestro will direct The Key Man, a film about  “a man whose body contains answers to national secrets.” And yes, it’s completely unrelated to the National Treasure franchise. (The Wrap) Following Warner Bros. footsteps, Universal is set to offer rentals of the cult hit The Big Lebowski on Facebook. The app for Facebook was created by Milyoni. (THR) In other Scott brother news, Ridley’s little brother Tony Scott is set to remake Sam Peckinpah’s The Wild Bunch. (Deadline) Director Shawn Levy is considering leaving...

James Cameron goes for the X Prize

Posted by on Sep 20, 2010 in The Pictures | 0 comments

Sometimes I think that James Cameron just picks a challenge and goes for it. Before Titanic, I’ll bet he said, “Yeah, I can win Best Picture.” Before Avatar, he probably said, “Yeah, I can reinvent this 3D thing.”  Now as James Cameron plans the sequel to Avatar, it looks like he’s going to keep his eyes on another prize: The X Prize. Mashable is reporting (via the Daily Mail) that Cameron will film the Avatar sequel 6.8 miles underwater in an attempt to win a $10 million X-Prize. The goal: Build a manned submersible  that will allow humans to return to the Challenger Deep for the first time in half a century. If anyone can do it, Cameron can. Read more about Cameron’s plans...

AVATAR hits $500 million domestic, TITANIC record going down

Posted by on Jan 19, 2010 in Box Office | 0 comments

Yesterday, Avatar became only the third film in motion picture history to hit the $500 million mark at the domestic box office ($505 million to be specific). With a $54 million four-day total over the MLK holiday, King of the World Universe James Cameron is now almost guaranteed to top his own Titanic when Avatar becomes the highest grossing picture at the domestic box office. Look for that to come sometime mid-February. And Titanic‘s worldwide record? Expect that to go down before month’s end. Avatar is only $220 million dollars away from hitting $1.84 billion dollar mark. It’s been pulling in more than $150 million worldwide just on weekends, and its regular weekend take overseas is going up not down. (China pulling the 2D version from its cinemas could have an slight impact, though.) Now instead of wondering if...
