It was a sci-fi picture that ended Titanic‘s epic box office winning streak, so it’s fitting that a love story put a stop to Avatar‘s 7-week run at the top of the weekend box office. Dear John, based on the Nicholas Sparks novel, took in $32.4 million for the top spot this weekend, a Super Bowl weekend record. Avatar was No. 2 with $23.6 million, which is nothing to sneeze at as.
