Sundance Selects Announces Release Date For Palme d’Or Winner BLUE IS THE WARMEST COLOR
Palme d’Or winner Blue is the Warmest Color may not be able to compete for the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar, but Sundance Selects will still release the film in the US this year. The film was ruled ineligible for the Foreign Language Film race because it’s not being released in its home country until after the Academy Awards consideration deadline. Abdellatif Kechiche’s lesbian romance, however, will still be eligible for other Oscar categories because Sundance Selects plans an Oct. 25 release. And according to Deadline, Sundance won’t compromise Kechiche’s work by cutting it down. Instead the film will be released uncut with an NC-17 rating, which doesn’t seem to matter any longer in a VOD world. You may not be able to see this movie at Cinemark, but the local art house theater and your Xbox will surely make up for...
Read MoreEdgar Wright Explains An Ultron-Less ANT-MAN
Let’s be honest. Most of the movie-going public didn’t even know what an Ultron was until The Avengers: Age of Ultron title was announced at Comic Con. But fanboys quickly realized there was something wrong with Ultron appearing in a movie before Edgar Wright’s Ant-Man, which kicks off Marvel Phase Three in the fall of 2015. Instead of having Hank Pym (Ant-Man) build the living automaton, most people now assume that Tony Stark or Jarvis will be the supervillain’s creator in Avengers 2. But according to an interview Edgar Wright gave to HuffPost, the director never intended to take on such a major villain in his first outing with Ant-Man: It was never in my script. Because even just to sort of set up what Ant-Man does is enough for one movie. It’s why I think Iron Man is extremely successful because...
Read MoreNeill Blomkamp’s CHAPPIE Gets A Release Date
Neill Blomkamp’s Elysium is sputtering along at the box office, like so many other movies this summer. So it’s probably best to keep looking forward for Blomkamp and company. Well, now we know that Blomkamp’s next movie, a light-hearted sci-fi romp titled Chappie, is set for a March 27, 2015. So what is Chappie about? Chappie tells the story of a robot imbued with artificial intelligence who is stolen by two local gangsters who want to use him for their own nefarious purposes. The film will star Sharlto Copley as the voice of Chappie, with Ninja and Yolandi Visser, voices of the South African Zef counter-culture movement and members of rap-rave duo Die Antwoord, as the two gangsters. I still haven’t seen Elysium, to be honest, and don’t think I will until it’s available on home video. Mostly because the reviews have only been...
Read MoreRumor: Disney & Abrams Are Targeting A December Release For STAR WARS VII
While we can debate the differences between the prequels and the original trilogy all day long (visual effects, suckage, etc.), there’s one thing all the Star Wars movies have in common: They were all released in May. Well, word on the blog is that Disney and J.J. Abrams are targeting a December 2015 release date for Star Wars: Episode VII. Nothing is official yet, but this makes sense for a number of reasons: A summer 2015 release is ambitious, if not completely unrealistic given the production time frame. (Is there even a script yet?) This will give Abrams and company about seven more months to work on the picture. The summer of 2015 is also very, very crowded. Disney is probably content to have Marvel’s Avengers: Age of Ultron be their big summer hit, so no need to overload the...
Read MoreThe Best Summer Movies of 2013—And What It Even Means To Be A Blockbuster
Summer, though with a definitive start and end date meteorologically (unless we consider global warming’s recent tendency to warm us up earlier than June 21st and keep us sweating into October… but I digress) can carry different meanings for different people when it comes to movie-going. We all know, generally, what films are going to be in a “summer movie preview” of a given magazine, or when all the big blockbusters will start piling up until we’re drowning in a sea of franchise failures and kids-movie merchandising. For me, the summer movie season is ending this week unfortunately, and it began in early May. I preface this post with all this before people read my favorite films of the summer and think to themselves, “well wait a minute that didn’t come out in the summer!” So, I’m taking some...
Read MoreJ.J. Abrams And Bad Robot Release Their Most Ridiculous Mystery Trailer Yet
It’s been a while since I gave a rats ass about J.J. Abrams’ mystery projects. Usually the teases and misdirection leading up to his and his cohorts’ films add nothing, not even marketing value, to the movie. But here we are, years after Lost drove everyone insane without a pay off and months after Khan was hidden from Star Trek Into Darkness for absolutely no reason whatsoever, and Abrams is still at it. For me, the ultimate Abrams mystery is and forever will be why he ever let Felicity cut her hair. But here’s the trailer for whatever the hell his production company doing now, anyway. Try and enjoy it. I mean, they went through all this trouble to make you think they’re smarter than you are, so someone has...
