This year’s fest, the 40th, like most years includes a heavy list of Oscar contenders from the Coens, Alexander Payne, Werner Herzog, Errol Morris and Jason Reitman. One of the biggest arguments against Ben Affleck as Batman was his troubled past. Pearl Harbor. Reindeer Games. Gigli, which earned him two Golden Raspberry Awards from the Razzies, as well as a nomination for worst actor of the decade. But as his career improved, he made Gone Baby Gone. Then The Town. Just this year he won his second Oscar, this time for Best Picture, for his movie Argo. Now there’s a turnaround that deserves some recognition. Inspired by Affleck, the Razzies have created the new Redeemer awards, honoring people who went from the worst to the best. According to Razzies founder John Wilson: “The Razzies were originally meant not only to point out the year’s ‘Worst Achievements in Film,’ but it was also hoped they would also serve as encouragement for each year’s nominees to make better choices on future projects, thus eventually...

He’s no A.O. Scott, but the coolest president ever has seen Lee Daniels’ The Butler (read my four star review here) and he’s giving the film high praise. Barack Obama, in an interview on the Tom Joyner Morning Show, said the movie, which is out now and scoring big Oscar buzz, even made him tear up a bit: You know, I did see The Butler, and I did tear up. I teared up just thinking about not just the butlers who have worked here in the White House, but an entire generation of people who were talented and skilled, but because of Jim Crow, because of discrimination, there was only so far they could go. And yet, with dignity and tenacity, they got up and worked every single day, and put up with a whole lot of mess because they hoped for something...

The X-Files turns 20 years old on Sept. 20 and there’s one thing fans really, really want to know: Is there going to be a third movie? Thanks to Empire Online, which interviewed X-Files creator Chris Carter for their upcoming issue, we’ve learned that we may actually get to see more X-Files on the big screen: “It’s really up to Twentieth Century Fox, whether they have the will to do it. I think all of us are interested in putting the band back together. I have an idea for a third movie in my head. The colonisation (sic) date has passed and that is something we wouldn’t ignore. For the second movie, we only had the budget for a standalone story, but we want to go back to the mythology.” Oh, the possibilities. Even though I admittedly hated the last couple seasons...

What’s the point in making a documentary like The Act of Killing if not to spur some sort of social change? Well, if you asked the folks at Drafthouse Films, they’d probably tell you there isn’t one. While distributor is currently releasing the film commercially across the US (I have to wait until mid-September to see it in Cleveland), soon the doc will be available to all of Indonesia. For free. In perpetuity. Joshua Oppenheimer’s The Act of Killing examines the Indonesian genocide of 1965-66 by having death squad leaders of the day reenact their atrocities in the style of their favorite Hollywood films. Because the film will likely be banned from traditional release, Drafthouse Films is teaming with media company VICE and digital platform company VHX to make the film available online at www.actofkilling.com for residents of Indonesia starting on Sept. 30. Why...
Read MoreARRESTED DEVELOPMENT Creator: I’m Working On The Movie Right Now
Mitch Hurwitz has some great news for us Arrested Development fans. He’s working on the movie. In an interview with Rolling Stone, the show’s creator confirmed that a motion picture is in the works but had this to say about the future: “I can’t get into much more detail because I don’t want to scare anybody off. I don’t want to be presumptuous about it. I don’t own the property outright – it’s a 20th Century Fox property. But everybody seems really into it and really eager to make a movie.” Still, Hurwitz has a master plan. Once the movie is complete, whenever that is, he’ll move on to a fifth season of the show, presumably at Netflix. As a defender of the fourth season (I think it’s the series’ best), I personally can’t wait to see what Hurwitz has...
