Watch The Toronto International Film Festival’s Tribute To Roger Ebert

Posted by on Sep 8, 2013 in The Pictures | 0 comments

Losing Roger Ebert is one of the saddest things to happen to film in 2013. I, like many others, probably wouldn’t even have this blog if it wasn’t for Rog. Most of my love for him still stems back to reading his review of Scream when I was 14-years-old, Rog being one of the only mainstream critics who gave the film a positive review. He give me a vocabulary for what I was watching, making my slasher obsession an entry point into the greater world of film. And I loved this description in his review: One old standby is the scene where someone unexpectedly enters the frame, frightening the heroine, while a sinister musical chord pounds on the soundtrack. I love these scenes, because (a) the chord carries a message of danger, but (b) of course the unexpected new person is...

Ian McKellen Is Bill Condon’s Retired Sherlock Holmes In A SLIGHT TRICK OF THE MIND

Posted by on Sep 7, 2013 in The Pictures | 0 comments

Sir Ian McKellen is once again teaming up with his Gods & Monsters director Bill Condon, this time playing a senior Sherlock Holmes in A Slight Trick of the Mind. According to THR, the film is based on the Mitch Cullin’s book of the same name and focuses on a retired Holmes who is still haunted by an unsolved case from five decades earlier. Sure, it’s a genre story line that’s well-tread, but not with the likes of Holmes dealing with a waning mind on top of the “last chance” narrative. Given that there are already two popular Sherlock Holmes TV series on the air right now, with CBS’s Elementary and the BBC’s Sherlock starring Benedict Cumberbatch, it’s certainly the right time to put even an aging Holmes on the big screen. After all, we still need to wash the taste of Guy Ritchie’s...

Will Smith In Talks For INDEPENDENCE DAY Sequel; Release Moving to 2016?

Posted by on Sep 7, 2013 in The Pictures | 11 comments

With White House Down opening in the UK, director Roland Emmerich has been on his press tour where he inevitably got asked a question about the announced Independence Day sequel. We thought we knew two things for sure about the sequel before he started talking. One, the movie won’t feature Will Smith, and two, it was slated for 2015. In chatting with the good folks over at Digital Spy UK, it seems that both of those things might not be completely true. According to Emmerich, he’s now planning to see if Will Smith wants in: “I sometimes say no, Will Smith will not be in it because he didn’t want to do it at first. Now we have a meeting planned, we want to talk about it again. Anything can happen.” That could just be back-tracking for a casting announcement that wasn’t...

The TERMINATOR Sequel/Reboot Gets A Director

Posted by on Sep 6, 2013 in The Pictures | 0 comments

While we wait for the Terminator rights to revert back to James Cameron, the studios in charge now still have other movies in the works. Those next films in the sci-fi franchise are planned as new trilogy, with Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger returning to play his iconic role. But who’s in charge of the production? It looks like Alan Taylor, the man who’s directing Thor: The Dark World and helmed episodes of Game of Thrones, is in final negotiations to direct the first sequel/reboot for Paramount Pictures, Skydance Productions and Annapurna Pictures. Taylor beat out other directors on the shortlist including Rain Johnson, Denis Villeneuve and for some reason, Ang Lee. With the picture due out in 2015 and expected to begin production in early 2014, getting Taylor in place is likely a high priority. Hopefully we’ll get additional casting details, outside of Schwarzenegger, soon,...

New THOR: THE DARK WORLD Poster Is All Malekith-y

Posted by on Sep 6, 2013 in Posters | 0 comments

Marvel released the latest, and really the best, poster for Thor: The Dark World, this time giving Malekith (played by Christopher Eccleston) some much needed attention. I haven’t been that impressed by what we’ve seen so far in terms of movie art. But this poster is pretty kick ass. Thor: The Dark World Hits Theaters on Nov. 8,...

The ROBCOP Remake Has A Trailer And It’s Not Worth Buying For A Dollar

Posted by on Sep 6, 2013 in Trailers | 6 comments

Generally speaking, I won’t post movie news that I just don’t care about. That’s why you haven’t seen anything about Transformers 4 on here. But the trailer for the Robocop remake that comes out next year has been released and I can’t help but share the horror. You see, Verhoeven’s Robocop is a masterpiece and remaking it is no different that returning to any great work of cinema. José Padilha’s RoboCop looks like the soulless, characterless product that we expect from the likes of World War Z… but not Robo. Based on this trailer, the best case scenario we’re probably looking at is a watchable movie. Worst case… well, if I have to hear talented actors utter such incredible nonsense (“We’re putting a man in a machine.” “We are on the eve of a technological revolution.” “Alex, you need to speak to your son.”) for two hours, then...
