I hated Star Trek: Into Darkness. I hated its weak character development. I hated it’s half-assed attempt at a mystery reveal. And I hated the goofy action, which made Attack of the Clones look like a sci-fi adventure masterpiece. Yes, Star Trek: Into Darkness is that bad. But it made a starship-load of money, so there’s going to be a third film, no question. The good news is, while J.J. Abrams is off making the Star Wars movie he always wanted to make, he’s leaving Star Trek in the hands of another director. And that director? I’ll be honest. I haven’t watched S.H.I.E.L.D. since the show’s third episode. The series is missing a few key elements of any modern TV series, most importantly an interesting meta-narrative that ties the season together. (At least that was the case when I stopped watching.) So Jim Jarmusch made a vampire movie with Tilda Swinton and Tom Hiddleston. That’s about the only thing I need/want to know going into Only Lovers Left Alive. But because I didn’t even know this movie existed until the trailer came out, I couldn’t help but watch this ultimately mystifying trailer for the latest addition to the growing vamp cinema cannon. Going out on a limb, we’re probably going to see vampires thirsting for blood, along with some vamp sex. But hey, it’s Tilda, Tom and Jim, so count me in whatever the case may be.
