4 Existential Short Films At The Berlinale 2014

The big screen arrives once again to the exciting and cosmopolitan capital of Germany. Berlinale, which has been celebrated since 1978, will be hosting 25 short films from 21 different countries competing for the Golden Bear. The 64th International Short Film Jury will be composed by Edwin E. from Indonesia, Nuno Rodrigues from Portugal and Christine Tohme from Lebanon. For another year, Berlin brings us the chance to test the limits of our comprehension thanks to a wide variety of radical and independent short films. Without any doubt, The Berlinale 2014 is another reason to visit this amazing capital. Afronauts (USA) Afronauts by Frances Bodomo tells us the alternative story of the Space Race in 1960. While the Americans are trying to send the Apollo to the Moon, a group of exiles in the Zambian desert are trying to...

The Contenders: It’s A Three-Way In The Best Picture Oscar Race

Posted by on Jan 20, 2014 in Awards | 0 comments

For the first time in my Oscar watching years (17!), something strange is happening in the Best Picture race: There’s a legit three-way race for the top prize between American Hustle, 12 Years a Slave and Gravity . While most of the acting prizes have settled, with the exception of Jennifer Lawrence vs. Lupita Nyong’o, and Alfonso Cuaron looks locked in for a Best Director win, the Best Picture far from over at the moment. So here’s what happened. The Golden Globes gave American Hustle and 12 Years a Slave a boost, followed by another Best Picture prize for Slave at the Critics’ Choice Movie Awards.  All well and good, but The Social Network and Saving Private Ryan were in the same position as 12 Years a Slave when they lost Best Picture. Critical darlings don’t seem to have as much luck in the long run, especially ones that sweep...

BATMAN VS. SUPERMAN Moves to 2016

Posted by on Jan 18, 2014 in The Pictures | 0 comments

It looks like 2015 will have one less mega blockbuster on its hands. With all the rumors about casting and planning and rewriting going around, it’s not terribly surprising that Warner Bros. has decided to delay Batman Vs. Superman for year, putting in on the schedule for the first weekend in May 2016. (More on that in a second.) It seemed precarious at best once it was known that Argo‘s Chris Terrio was brought in to doctor the Goyer script, which now we know for sure quite obviously sucks.  That’s really the only explanation for a delay like this. The story/script needs work, especially with an ever expanding scope. That’s that. The internet has been abuzz with chatter about multiple villains and even more heroes, like Wonder Woman and Flash, which adds up to a complicated story. And all of this points...

You don’t always have to have the most nominations to win Best Picture, but it certainly helps. American Hustle and Gravity, in this case, might just have hurdled past 12 Years a Slave in the Oscar race, scoring 10 nominations each, while 12 Years got nine. Full analysis later. Anyway, here’s the complete list: Best Picture American Hustle Captain Phillips Dallas Buyers Club Gravity Her Nebraska Philomena 12 Years a Slave The Wolf of Wall Street Best Actor Christian Bale, American Hustle (Sony Pictures Releasing) Bruce Dern, Nebraska (Paramount) Leonardo DiCaprio, The Wolf of Wall Street (Paramount) Chiwetel Ejiofor, 12 Years a Slave (Fox Searchlight) Matthew McConaughey,  Dallas Buyers Club (Focus Features) Best Actress Amy Adams, American Hustle (Sony Pictures Releasing) Cate Blanchett, Blue Jasmine (Sony Pictures Classics) Sandra Bullock, Gravity (Warner Bros.) Michael Douglas is Hank Pym in ANT-MAN

Posted by on Jan 14, 2014 in Big News, The Pictures | 0 comments

It looks like last’s week rumors that Edgar Wright’s Ant-Man would focus more on Scott Lang than Hank Pym are true. Marvel has announced that Michael Douglas has joined the cast of the upcoming Marvel movie as Dr. Henry Pym. That means Rudd could only be playing Lang. So what’s this movie about then? Well, Scott Lang’s Ant-Man origin story is this: The father of a dying girl, Lang breaks into Hank Pym’s house to steal the Ant-Man suit and uses it to find and rescue Dr. Erica Sondheim, the only person who can save his daughter.  When Lang attempts to give the suit back to Pym, old Ant-Man tell Lang to keep it and uphold the law. Kevin Feige has already stated that Ant-Man will be more of a “heist movie” than your standard superhero fare. So we’re basically in store for a...
