THE KING’S SPEECH takes Toronto #TIFF
Director Tom Hooper (The Damned United) saw his period drama The King’s Speech take the People’s Choice Award at the Toronto International Film Festival today. If you’re watching Oscar, that means you now only have 9 other spot to fill on your Best Picture predictions card. With People’s Choice Award’s history as an Oscar precursor and stars Colin Firth and Geoffrey Rush being buzzed, you can bet that the anglophiles in the Academy will line-up behind this UK production. (The Weinstein Company backing helps, too.) So what’s it about? The King’s Speech tells the story of the man who would be King George VI overcoming a speech impediment to address British citizens during WWII. Firth stars King George VI, while Rush plays his speech therapist. Helena Bonham Carter co-stars as George’s Queen Elizabeth. The King’s Speech will be released...

Not so, thanks to the Cleveland International Film Festival, which has two more screening of Hipsters to go before the festival’s end. From CIFF: A smash success in Russia and winner of top NIKA Awards including Best Film, Best Sound, Best Art Design, and Best Costume Design, Hipsters is a candy-colored musical set in the drab Soviet Union of the 1950s. Hipsters, directed by Valery Todorovsky, screens at the 34th Cleveland International Film Festival tonight at 7 p.m. (on Stand By) and tomorrow at 10...
