THE HURT LOCKER takes LAFCA prize

Posted by on Dec 13, 2009 in Awards | 0 comments

Today The Hurt Locker scored its second, and probably most important win so far, this Oscar season. While the Los Angeles Film Critics Association sometimes thinks too far outside the box for Oscar’s taste (see WALL-E‘s win), The Hurt Locker‘s prize here pretty much locks it in for a Best Picture nomination. Even if it doesn’t win the top prize, I’m starting to think Kathryn Bigelow may be the one to beat in the Best Director race. (Sorry, Jason Reitman.) PICTURE: The Hurt Locker Runner-up: Up in the Air DIRECTOR: Kathryn Bigelow, The Hurt Locker Runner-up: Michael Haneke, The White Ribbon ACTRESS: Yolande Moreau, Séraphine Runner-up: Carey Mulligan, An Education ACTOR: Jeff Bridges, Crazy Heart Runner-up: Colin Firth, A Single Man SUPPORTING ACTRESS: Mo’Nique, Precious Runner-up: Anna Kendrick, Up in the Air SUPPORTING ACTOR: Christoph Waltz, Inglourious Basterds Runner-up:...

National Board of Review announces tomorrow

Posted by on Dec 2, 2009 in Awards | 1 comment

The National Board of Review announces its annual winners tomorrow. Unless they pick something out of left field (Quills? Seriously?), we’ll know at least one of the Best Picture Oscar nominees tomorrow. So what film will take the NBR’s top prize? Up in the Air is where I’m putting my money. But as our friends over at AwardsDaily say, “Nobody knows anything.” Just the way I like it. Other predictions: Colin Firth for Best Actor. Carey Mulligan for Best Actress. Christopher Plummer and Mo’Nique for supporting awards. What do you think...

Finally! Bacall, Corman, Willis receive Honorary Oscars

Posted by on Nov 16, 2009 in Awards | 0 comments

The Academy held the inaugural Governors Awards dinner on Nov. 14 and handed out honorary Oscars to Hollywood superstar Lauren Bacall, B-movie master Roger Corman, and one of the greatest living DPs Gordon Willis. Producer John Calley (Catch-22, The Da Vinci Code) also received the Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award at the banquet. It was the first time since 2000 that the Academy gave out the lifetime achievement award for producers. These awards are traditionally handed out at the Oscar ceremony, but  this year, the Academy chose to hand them out at a separate ceremony. Thankfully, the Academy posted videos of the acceptance speeches...
