Flu, Ryan Reynolds and THE X-FILES 3

I spent most of the last week huddled under a blanket on my couch with enough Dayquil in my system to kill even the healthiest liver. That means I had plenty of quality time with Netflix Instant Streaming on my Xbox. Rather than watching the myriad Criterion Collection titles that are regularly “Top Picks for Daniel,” I chose to consume media from a simpler time: The X-Files, circa 1995. I was 13-years-old back then, and probably didn’t appreciate just how good the drama was in the series. But rather than expounding on the nuanced character development in even the wackiest monster of the week episodes, I’d like to focus on something that seemed much more important in my cold medicine-induced fog: Ryan Reynolds was in an episode of The X-Files! No, really. He was. Here’s a picture: Before dating Sandra...

Posters: Technological innovations that deserve THE SOCIAL NETWORK treatment

Posted by on Dec 20, 2010 in Random | 0 comments

Outside of The Pirates of Silicon Valley, there aren’t many movies that put innovators under the microscope quite like The Social Network. Admittedly, I’m not over the moon for David Fincher’s take on Facebook’s founding like some old… er… veteran film critics. I do, however, like the idea of seeing other feature films about the people who changed culture through technology. Here are just a few ideas, including a Bill Gates rehash: Who should direct?...

2010 Black List: The top unproduced screenplays in Hollywood

Posted by on Dec 13, 2010 in Random | 0 comments

The young Karl Rove chronicles, an Aronofsky-directed Jackie Kennedy drama, an Oklahoma City bombing conspiracy thriller, and a Jane Austen sex comedy are some of the top unproduced screenplays of 2010. The sixth annual Black List, Franklin Leonard’s survey of studio execs, was released today and it had loads of goodies. I’m partial to some of the potential flicks outside of the top 10, like The Girl with Something Extra and O.K.C. Of course, I had to highlight …Jane Austen above even though the screenplay isn’t in the top 10. It’s not everyday you get to use the phrase “Jane Austen sex comedy,” you know. From the L.A. Times: 49 votes: “College Republicans” by Wes Jones. Aspiring politician Karl Rove leads a dirty campaign for College Republican chairman under the guidance of Lee Atwater. THE SOCIAL NETWORK dominates 2010 National Board of Review

Posted by on Dec 3, 2010 in Random | 0 comments

So the National Board of Review picks The Social Network. David Fincher’s Facebook movie snagged the Best Picture award, as well as Best Director, Best Actor (Jesse Eisenberg), and Best Adapted Screenplay (Aaron Sorkin).  Not since Sense and Sensibility swept the awards in 1995 has a film so overwhelmingly dominated the NBR. (Ang Lee’s Jane Austen adaptation won Picture, Director, and Actress.) For a little context, Sense and Sensibility was the early Best Picture favorite, winning every early award including the BFCA’s Critics Choice, BAFTA’s Orange Award, the HFPA’s Golden Globe. When push came to shove, the Academy went with Braveheart for Best Picture, which slowly built up momentum throughout the season. Is The Social Network peaking too early already? Or is it a slam dunk Oscar winner? Who knows. Now to the full list of NBR winners from the...

Swoon-Worthy: GLEE’s Matthew Morrison in Details Magazine

Posted by on Nov 18, 2010 in Swoon-Worthy, The Tube | 0 comments

Are you hot for teacher? Gleeks might just explode after seeing this Details cover featuring an ab-ulous Matthew Morrison. Morrison is featured in this month’s issue and he sat down with the magazine for an interview. So what did the 32-year-old TV and Broadway star (and former member of the boy band LMNT) have to say to his younger Glee co-stars? “I am a teacher to them,” Morrison says of the younger castmates he refers to as “the kids.” “I’ve taken a few under my wing. I don’t want to say they idolize me, but…” he trails off, realizing how this might sound.  He’s careful about what he says and wishes some of his colleagues were a little less publicity-driven.  “Yeah, I find myself learning a lot from the set. I do look at stuff people on the show...
