Box Office: GRAVITY Breaks October Opening Weekend Record
I’m not a huge fan of focusing on box office numbers, which is why I don’t post weekly top ten lists. But every once in a while, something extraordinary happens at the box office. For Gravity, it was one of those moments.
Alfonso Cuarón’s space thriller beat pretty much everyone’s expectations to a pulp when it opened at $55 million. There are summer blockbusters that don’t get that kind of opening.
The total, helped along by 3D ticket sales and a wonderful marketing campaign, was enough to give Gravity the record for biggest October opening of all-time, surpassing Paranormal Activity 3.
And with that, Gravity has further positioned itself as an Oscar contender. In fact, most pundits now have it just behind the front runner 12 Years a Slave in the race for Best Picture, while Sandra Bullock is now in a neck-and-neck race with Cate Blanchett for Best Actress. Oh, what a difference a weekend makes.
