It looks like Steve Rogers will be able to get a few more pop culture references in the next Captain America movie. By time we open on the newest story, Rogers will have spent two years watching Miley Cyrus twerk and lived through two more generations of the iPhone.  That’s at least according to Scarlett Johansson, who told Refinery 29 that Captain America: The Winter Soldier will take place in 2014:

“This film is in real time. It’s been two years since [the characters] appeared, and now both are agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. fighting in the streets. We are not superheroes flying side by side. They help each other because we are fighting in a similar way. It’s a working relationship.”

Considering the last film ended with Rogers in a deep freeze for 6o-something years, there’s not much choice in having Cap’s latest story take place in the present day. But such devotion to the series continuity probably isn’t likely through all Phases and Marvel will have to loosen the rules a bit as it builds out its Cinematic Universe on both the big and small screens.

Speaking of small screens, now that Cap is an agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. does that mean he’ll be on the TV series too at some point? That, my friends, is still a mystery.
