Paul Greengrass Leaves THE TRIAL OF THE CHICAGO 7
Just ahead of the release of his latest docu-actioner Captain Phillips, Paul Greengrass has left the ever-developing The Trial of The Chicago 7.
Greengrass replaced Steven Spielberg who replaced Ben Stiller who replaced Spielberg (yeah, it’s been going around for a while) as the helmer of the Aaron Sorkin-scripted feature, which has been trying to get off the ground since 2007. At this rate, if Spielberg ever does come back on board, this project is going to have a development story of epic proportions, enough to rival Spielberg’s long-gestating Lincoln.
Chicago 7 tells the story of seven political activists who were charged with conspiring to incite violence at the 1968 Democratic National Convention. Greengrass apparently left over budget concerns, where he wanted $40 million and the studio only wanted $20-30 million.
Considering this is a Sorkin script, someone will likely fill the slot. I wonder what Rob Reiner (The American President, A Few Good Men) is up to?
