Will Smith In Talks For INDEPENDENCE DAY Sequel; Release Moving to 2016?
With White House Down opening in the UK, director Roland Emmerich has been on his press tour where he inevitably got asked a question about the announced Independence Day sequel. We thought we knew two things for sure about the sequel before he started talking. One, the movie won’t feature Will Smith, and two, it was slated for 2015.
In chatting with the good folks over at Digital Spy UK, it seems that both of those things might not be completely true. According to Emmerich, he’s now planning to see if Will Smith wants in:
“I sometimes say no, Will Smith will not be in it because he didn’t want to do it at first. Now we have a meeting planned, we want to talk about it again. Anything can happen.”
That could just be back-tracking for a casting announcement that wasn’t supposed to go public so soon, but it would still be great to have Mr. Smith back for round two.
But with that good news comes some bad news. Emmerich also indicated that there is definite flexibility in the release date:
“…I will for sure make it for 2015 or 2016, probably as it looks right now as it looks ’16.”
Given just how crowded the summer of 2015 is right now, it’s no surprise that Independence Day 2 would move to the more wide open year of 2016. Plus, that year would make it exactly three decades since the release of the original movie, a nice round number for promotional purposes if I ever read one.
