Ian McKellen Is Bill Condon’s Retired Sherlock Holmes In A SLIGHT TRICK OF THE MIND
Sir Ian McKellen is once again teaming up with his Gods & Monsters director Bill Condon, this time playing a senior Sherlock Holmes in A Slight Trick of the Mind.
According to THR, the film is based on the Mitch Cullin’s book of the same name and focuses on a retired Holmes who is still haunted by an unsolved case from five decades earlier. Sure, it’s a genre story line that’s well-tread, but not with the likes of Holmes dealing with a waning mind on top of the “last chance” narrative.
Given that there are already two popular Sherlock Holmes TV series on the air right now, with CBS’s Elementary and the BBC’s Sherlock starring Benedict Cumberbatch, it’s certainly the right time to put even an aging Holmes on the big screen. After all, we still need to wash the taste of Guy Ritchie’s awful Holmes flicks out of our mouths. Condon and the man he directed to an Oscar nomination will hopefully be able to do just that.
