Rogue Almost Made It Into THE WOLVERINE
Could Rogue have been in The Wolverine? As a complete film and one that totally makes up for that horrible X-Men Origins flick, The Wolverine is fine without her.
But bringing Rogue back into the X-Men Cinematic Universe (that’s a thing now, ya know) is something I hope can happen someday. Apparently so do the The Wolverine‘s writers.
In an interview with Creative Screenwriting, writer Mark Bomback was asked if there was any character he wanted to use but wasn’t able to. Bomback revealed that he wanted to include Rogue and he even tried to get her in the script:
So I was trying to do something with Rogue in the script. I even had a set of ideas that the old man possessed a version of Rogue’s power and that was going to be indicated by a white stripe in his hair.
While that idea didn’t pan out (thankfully), Bomback really wished he could have made it happen:
It’s no accident to me that in the first X-Men film the first two mutants that you really see who have a connection are Wolverine and Rogue. There’s something special between them, so I was trying to bring Rogue into it, but it just didn’t get there. I regretted there wasn’t a way to figure it out, but when I look at the film now, it would have stuck out if we tried to shoehorn her in there just because it was another character from the universe.
So what do you think? Would Rogue have made a good addition to The Wolverine? Or should we just wait for another X-Men movie where Rogue could make an appearance?
the wolverine suck so bad. the story didn’t make sense and there were too many plot holes.
Rogue is in the Days of Future Past movie, so it’s all good.
Jean Grey alone nearly derailed ‘The Wolverine’ for me (and she’s dead!)
Adding Rogue would have added to the exclusivity in storytelling that was a flaw as the movie exists in its theatrical version.
I believe that standalone movies must do just that; stand alone. While Logan is the most potentially satisfying spin-off in the X-Men CU, I want the directors to stop trying to please hardcore fans by including characters from other story lines.
Just give Logan a great, kick ass narrative. Add in some action that serves the story. Lather, rinse, repeat.
Enough with Wolverine’s “ghosts of girlfriends past” nonsense.
A smart decision to exclude Rogue.
Great article!
Totally agree. Could have done without the old Grey lady, too. That could have been dealt with much more elegantly. Thanks!
