Joss Whedon: ‘Thanos Was Never Meant To Be The Next Villain’
Ever since Thanos appeared in The Avengers‘ mid-credit sequence, fans have speculated as to what role Thanos would play in the greater Marvel-verse. Well, Joss Whedon has some bad news for you, Thanos fans. He’s not going to be the villain in Avengers: Age of Ultron, we know that. But in speaking with Total Film, Whedon downplayed Thanos’ role as an actual big bad in his vision of the Marvel world:
We have to stay grounded. It’s part of what makes the Marvel universe click – their relationship to the real world. It’s science-fiction, and Thanos is not out of the mix, but Thanos was never meant to be the next villain. He’s always been the overlord of villainy & darkness.
The good news is that with Gaurdians of the Galaxy, Thanos is a much more tangible menace. His adopted daughter Gamora (Zoe Saldana) is in Guardians, as well as Drax (Dave Bautista) who is out for revenge against Thanos for killing his family. So it’s likely that Thanos will be a part in the future, but there’s some groundwork to be laid before Whedon and company can go the full Thanos. A gradual build up into heavy science fiction is probably what he’s alluding to more than a simple no Thanos, no how.
We’ll see how this shapes up. Because if you’re not already excited enough for The Avengers 2, you can already start anticipating The Avengers 3. It’s just 5 years away, after all.
