While Iron Man 3 was a necessary decompression after Marvel Phase 1, Captain America: The Winter Soldier is the picture that will really move us into Marvel Phase 2. At least that’s what the Russo Brothers are saying. The pair, Anthony and Joe, spoke with /Film on how the movie fits into the big picture of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Short of telling us exactly what the post-credits sequence will be, the brothers pumped up the movie’s importance in the grand scheme:

I think, and Kevin [Feige] has said this, it’s as big of a bridge of any of the Phase 2 movies from Avengers to Avengers 2. There’s a significant shift in the universe at the end of this movie. Like all of the Marvel movies it has elements of all of the other films, this one I think has probably the strongest bond between those goals…

The big shift in the universe happens because of him. It’s not something where we had to feel like we had to patchwork in all of these other narrative elements, it’s really Markus and McFeely wrote an amazing script that really streamlined this concept that Kevin wanted to get out there.

But that won’t hinder their style. As they have stated in the past, the Russo Brothers reaffirmed that the film will have elements of a 70s thriller:

I mean this movie draws upon The French Connection and The Conversation and Three Days of the Condor [ed: starring Cap 2 supporting player Robert Redford] and all of these ’70s thrillers in a way that there is paranoia and mistrust at the heart of the movie.

The first Captain America movie wasn’t what you would call a massive hit (it even made less than Superman Returns), so whether a lot of this is just positioning not-Iron Man as a movie you must go see is really up to the reader. It will, however, be interesting to see how The Avengers affects a movie that doesn’t involve Robert Downey, Jr. And the first test of this post-Iron Man, pre-Avengers 2 comes in November with another not-Iron Man movie, Thor: The Dark World.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier opens April 4, 2014.
