While Steve McQueen’s Shame only had one (rather big) thing going for it, the director gets back to making period movies with his upcoming film 12 Years a Slave. The film tells the true story of Solomon Northup, a free man from New York who is captured and sold into slavery in the South.

With this movie, plus The Butler, Fruitvale Station and Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom, you’re looking at one hell of a year for black cinema. The only question will be if one of these movies can overcome the inherent racism within the old white male Academy to take home the Oscar for Best Picture.
