CAPTAIN AMERICA is big in China
Well, it looks like China wins this round too. Captain America: The First Avenger has officially grossed more internationally than in the U.S. thanks to a $5 million opening weekend in the People’s Republic. That brings Cap’s overseas total to $178m compared to $173m at the domestic box office.
No one really expected the Marvel movie to make it in foreign territories because it had America in its title. That didn’t turn out to be the case, maybe because there’s a nostalgia factor. Remeber when America was cooperated with the rest of the world? Did the right thing? The good old days.
Still, the fact remains: China, the biggest holders of U.S. debt, is even subsidizing American superheros. I’m okay with this, mainly because anything that results in more Marvel movies is fine with me. (And being a citizen of the Rust Belt, I’m fully prepared to work in a Chinese labor camp someday.) Just don’t think that China is just going to sit on the sidelines of the motion picture industry. Hong Kong’s softcore blockbuster 3D Sex and Zen is coming soon to theater near you soon.
