Flu, Ryan Reynolds and THE X-FILES 3
RSSS

I spent most of the last week huddled under a blanket on my couch with enough Dayquil in my system to kill even the healthiest liver. That means I had plenty of quality time with Netflix Instant Streaming on my Xbox. Rather than watching the myriad Criterion Collection titles that are regularly “Top Picks for Daniel,” I chose to consume media from a simpler time: The X-Files, circa 1995.

I was 13-years-old back then, and probably didn’t appreciate just how good the drama was in the series. But rather than expounding on the nuanced character development in even the wackiest monster of the week episodes, I’d like to focus on something that seemed much more important in my cold medicine-induced fog: Ryan Reynolds was in an episode of The X-Files!

No, really. He was. Here’s a picture:

Before dating Sandra Bullock, divorcing Scarlett Johansson, and yes, even before he was one of two guys who, with a girl, ran a pizza place, Mr. Reynolds was a high school jock killed by two mean girls with telekinetic powers. (Season 3, episode 13 in case you’re interested.) Oh, how we always forget the important things in life.

So why is The X-Files 3 in the headline of this post. Well, the picture above comes from a website called X-Files Universe, which will go on my nostalgia browsing check list with sites like NinjaTurtles.com and Care Bears Forever (which keeps the spirit alive… forever). Because I spent the most of my sick days immersed in the paranormal world of Mulder and Scully once again, I clicked around the site a bit checking to see how the franchise was doing years after its hay day.  And what did I stumble upon? This post: David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson Both Desire X-Files 3.

Being a person who wants to believe The X-Files can be great again, and is willing to pay $10 to see Scream 4 out of love for that franchise (i.e., a masochist), I’m ready for an X-Files 3. Three simple requests to Carter and company before this movies forward:

  1. Say it with me, “Directed by David Nutter.” He helmed some of the best episodes of the series, including Beyond the Sea (which is arguably the best episode). Sure he’s mostly a TV guy, but his watchable teen thriller Disturbing Behavior makes him more qualified to make a motion picture than either other franchise regulars.
  2. Why so serious? Scully used to rib Mulder for things like his porn addiction. Those were the days. Have a little fun this time.
  3. A psychic pedophile priest is not an X-File. Remember that and all will be right with the world.

So bring it on. Heck, I hope they approach Ryan Reynolds to come back to the franchise for a starring role. (That will more than make up for casting Xzibit in the last movie.)
