Sometimes the movie gods shine upon us. THR broke the news this evening that Columbia Pictures has scrapped Spider-Man 4 after weeks of very public problems.

Amy Pascal, co-chair of Columbia, was in full spin mode, saying she’s “very excited about the creative possibilities that come from returning to Peter’s roots.” In truth, I’m excited too. Raimi might have scored with Spider-Man & Spider-Man 2, but he and the franchise both showed serious fatigue after Spider-Man 3. And I never really liked Tobey Maguire anyway.

Just please, Columbia, save us the pain of making us sit through another origin story when you relaunch in 2012.
