Top Story: New York, they love you. Spike Lee and Robert De Niro are teaming with Showtime to develop a series about New York’s Alphabet City, titled Alphaville. The show will be set in the 1980s, chronicling the lives of the pre-gentrified neighborhood’s residents, including Puerto Ricans, African Americans, musicians, and artists. Lee will direct the pilot and executive produce with De Niro and writer John Ridley. Sounds like that dream of seeing Lee at the helm of Rent will finally come true. Well, half true. (THR)

In Other News: Sony Pictures has picked up Defendor, superhero drama starring Woody Harrelson, at Toronto. (Variety)

Focus Features is teaming up with Oprah’s Harpo Films and Sam Mendes’ Neal Street Prods. for an adaptation of Netherland, based on the novel by Joseph O’Neill. Christopher Hampton will write the screenplay with Mendes possibly taking on the directing gig. (Variety)

It was bound to happen eventually. NBA superstar LeBron James will make his feature film debut playing himself in theĀ  comedy Fantasy Basketball Camp. At least he won’t have to play with Bugs Bunny. (Variety)
