Today’s Best News Ever: Weiner stays with ‘Mad Men’
Oh what a difference a Golden Globe makes. Looks like Lionsgate and Matthew Weiner have finally come to an agreement that will keep the show’s mastermind in charge for two more seasons.
Variety reports:
Details of the pact were sketchy Friday, but it is said to cover Weiner’s services on Mad Men for the show’s third and fourth seasons as well as other TV development. It also includes a component for a feature project through Lionsgate.
We Mad Men fans thank you Lionsgate. Not only are you keeping the man in charge of the best show on television on board for at least two more seasons, but you’re giving him a feature deal, too? Really, you shouldn’t have.
Ms. Finke over at Deadline Hollywood Daily said that this deal was so close to breaking down around the holidays that Weiner and his agent were searching for a publicist to spin their side of the story. Trust me. No matter how much money Weiner was asking for no fan of this show was going to side with Lionsgate.
The folks at R.J. Reynolds, however, are quite disappointed at today’s news. I’m sure they were already gearing up for a boost in Lucky Strike sales when outraged Mad Men fans looked for a way to protest Weiner’s departure. We can always inundate the Lionsgate offices with cartons of Luckies come season five.
