Who is the Superman mystery director?
A comic book writer who called making movies in Hollywood “a fun hobby”, but wrote the masterful Supes reimagining Superman: Red Son told the UK’s Daily Record that he’s got a plan for relaunching Superman. Mark Millar, whose graphic novel Wanted was just turned into a film, is so far into the game that he says he has a director and producer lined up for a 2011 release. He says we’ll just have to wait until Christmas to find out who they are.
At any other time, I’d call bullshit, but with DC Comics being pried from the cold (dead?) hands of Dan DiDio, my guess is Warner is going to push hard on finally getting some DC superhero films made and rebooting what needs rebooted.
Kris Tapley over at InContention.com pondered who that director might be based on Millar’s statement that “he (the director) has huge pull at WB.”
Tapley’s list is all sorts of awful, not because the choices are personal, but rather because they make sense. The Wachowskis, Zack Snyder, McG, Tim Burton, Francis Lawrence. (I agree Singer should get the boot, if only to ensure another movie gets made.) The only name on the list that feels right is Wolfgang Petersen.
Petersen’s was the first name that popped into my mind, if only because tried to do Batman Vs. Superman a few years back and has done big business for Warner with The Perfect Storm and Troy. Judging from his comments surrounding his attempts to get Batman Vs. Superman made, he seems to get Superman better than any of the other guys.
My fear, still, is that we are going to get that rumored Tim Burton, Nick Cage hipster Superman. Petersen would manage the action, find the conflict, and still keep it classic Superman.
By no means am I banking on Petersen. I have an icky feeling we are going to see McG’s version after all, that is if Warner lets him film it in the U.S.A.
